JDM Hero // Sanadi’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR on Volk Racing
When Mitsubishi announced that they’ll stop producing the Evo, and with no apparent successor in sight, the motoring world is in total loss. It is understandable though, since the ‘affordable turbocharged 4WD 4-door sedan with WRC heritage’ has become a smaller and smaller market over time. Only time will tell whether Mitsubishi will continue Lancer Evolution’s legacy.
Such discontinuation, however, has fortunately brought up all the older Evolution models to new lives. As showroom-fresh Evolutions are de-facto unavailable today, these older, wiser beasts have now mostly fallen to the hands of respected collectors and builders (at least in Indonesia, that’s the case). In particular, we have been following today’s Evolution VIII MR build for a while. It’s previous setup has been featured here, and now it’s back greater than ever.
Spawning ten generations ever since its birth, the Evolution series represents Mitsubishi’s relentless pursuit in the realm of versatile sports cars. Yes, it has four doors. But it won’t matter at all when you know what’s residing underneath the sheep’s clothing. Many people would probably remember how the Evo was strongly capable in sticking up to the rears of a Murcielago around the circuit of a British motor show, stubbornly tailing the supercar along the way. It’s such a capability which has earned the Evolution its title as one of the best Japanese performance cars ever made.
Sanadi is one among the plenty that has been bitten by the Evo bug. A childhood filled with enthusiasm for cars has led to a list of Japanese ‘enthusiasts’ car ownerships, which include a modified Honda Accord, Mitsubishi Eclipse, targa Toyota Supra, and a couple of Lancer Evolution VIII. Yes, he has owned another Lancer Evolution earlier during his life (it was back then when residing in the States), but hadn’t had the chance to tinker much with it.
That’s why, when the opportunity came in 2012 to acquire this Evolution VIII MR, he immediately drove away with it to relive his joyful Evolution moments.
Compared to the previous setup, this MR has gone through turbo swaps twice. In the previous article, it was running on GTX 30, but then Sanadi upgraded it to 6266 and currently GTX 35. All in the name for a better performance. Following the horsepower increase, he has also installed a set of Voltex front bumper, Voltex GT-wing and these gorgeous Volk CE28N wheels. All-in-all the MR has been tuned to become a much more aggressive beast to roam the Jakarta streets.
